The Right Thing

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Racehorse Barbaro was put down today. It was the right thing to do say his owners and vets, in light of his recent setbacks. They had always made it clear that if he was no longer fighting to improve or seemed to be stuck with constant pain they would euthanize him.
All owners should care so […]

My Soundtrack

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

I love last.fm. It’s a great service for keeping track of what you’re listening to, tracking what your friends enjoy and, best of all, finding new pleasures.
After setting up this computer to tie into the site and report back on what I’m listening for my weekly charts, I randomly opened their streaming radio to the […]

Brrr

-20 with a windchill of -34.
Celsius.
Tomorrow’s forecast? “Partly sunny and not as cold, -18″.
Snarky bastards.

Flexibility

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Okay, let me go on record saying that one of the aspects of my job I love is the flexibility of my schedule and time. Yes, there are some days when I will spend four or more hours in a classroom plus two or more hours in a meeting (don’t ask me about Monday’s big […]

Blog for Choice

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

It’s the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and it irks me, no end, that there are still people out there who are seeking to eliminate access to abortions. I’m a mother of two girls but my pro-choice stance isn’t so much out of fear on their behalf as from outrage that, in a western […]

Switcheroo

Unhook one 2003 tower at the office. Take it home. Unhook one 2002 computer at home. Set it aside. Install 2003 PC there. Curse Novell networking as you set things up. Fiddle for a while with that, the wireless link and the printer settings. Get everything up and running.
Look over at the 2002 tower. Waver […]

End Week Two

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Term’s just buzzing along. Unfortunately, committee work is already becoming a big time drain and I didn’t get nearly as much writing done this week as I’d hoped. Plus the first assignments will be up for grading as of Wednesday (1 page tutorial responses in one class, but still). Clocks are ticking. . . .

My plumber, my hero

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Mike the plumber is in the basement doing magical things to our laundry room pipes that involves putting in decent shut-off valves to the pipes that service the new washing machine. This will be doubly good because we should have better connections for the hoses to the washing machine.
Mike the plumber is an excellent tradesmen. […]

Look, Pa! No wires!

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

My lovely new widescreen laptop is up and running happily on my revived wireless network. Life is good, although I will have to get used to the new keyboard. The pointing touchpad is a bit disconcerting but I haven’t found a mouse that’s exactly right (yet!) so I’ll bear with it a while longer. But, […]

Why it’s fun to be a medievalist

Monday, January 15th, 2007

(Even though I’m technically an early modernist.)
Because you can use the word “booty” and neither crack a grin or blush.
