When in Rome

We’re rewatching the HBO series, Rome, now that it’s out on DVD. There’s only enough time in the evening, after the girls have gone to bed, to watch an episode or two but, oh!, it’s grand! Sometimes it’s more soap opera than history and the characters can be drawn a bit too broadly, but Ciaran Hinds, Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson are wonderful and the production values are amazing. I can’t wait for the second and, sadly, final season!

I’ve heard it several times over that HBO doesn’t want to bankroll a third. The show is very expensive and doesn’t get quite the ratings that its big hits have managed.

I’d love to be proven wrong but I expect that season two will take us up through the breakup of the second triumvirate and Octavian’s triumph.
