Last night when we returned home, there was a message on the answering machine. It was for youngest from a classmate, trying to arrange an online get-together in a popular online game.
She’s ten and it was her very first phone call from a peer. She returned it, reaching their machine and following my prompt to leave a message. When her friend phoned back, youngest was more relaxed: able to chat as she logged in and their avatars met up. Waiting for the log in screen, she hummed a bit and explained (in an obvious response to her classmate’s question) that “that’s what people do when they’re waiting”. They’re both learning.
She’s taking her first steps in making social contacts and I’m so very proud of her.
