WISE Women

Have you heard about WISE: Women in Science and Engineering? Last spring I morosely blogged about how eldest wasn’t nominated by her teacher for their day-long workshop aimed at interesting girls in grades 4-7 in the fields. Eldest was devastated. This year, the process was opened up for self-nomination and we acted fast so eldest could participate.

Saturday was the big day and she had a rip-roaring good time. Out of nineteen teams, hers placed second so she gleefully came home with a silver medal. She came away with great stuff in freebies from the sponsors but, more importantly, great memories of hands-on experiments in science and engineering.

Youngest also expressed interest but I was afraid that the format (day-long workshops in teams of four) wouldn’t be right for her so I didn’t sign her up. Instead I took her to swimming lessons and with me on some errands during which she impressed me with her patience and conversational skills. There are many varieties of wisdom and both my girls are making good progress towards that goal.

What a great experience. I had heard of WISE - some women I knew at my UG college were involved - but I didn’t know they did things like this for school kids until you blogged about it. Coolness!
