October’s downside?

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

The proliferation of horror movie advertisements on TV. No fun for someone who abhors the genre and can still get scared to death just by the string-heavy score they use in these commercials.

Hoist By My Own Cellphone

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

For the first time this year, a student’s cellphone rang in class. I cheerfully joshed with him as I pulled out my own already muted cellphone and thumbed down the ringer button, reminding everyone that they wanted to turn off the sounds in class.
Not ten minutes later? My own cellphone rang. Seems I had thumbed […]

If You Suspect

Monday, September 10th, 2007

that there is a correlation between the crazy busy-ness of my life and the relative lack of posting on my blog, you would be correct. I hope to surface on Thursday, but there is a good chance that I won’t be heard off until sometime on Sunday what with classes to teach, dogs to take […]

Hello, Grindstone!

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

Having taken the last few days of summer holiday that I could manage, it’s back to work with a vengeance: grad student defenses to shepherd through, lectures to draft, paper(s) to write and a proposal to polish off. Of course, all I can think about is that I desperately need a new haircut and I’d […]

Away

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Now that my course outlines are all in for duplication, I’m taking a few days with the family to head south, visit with the in-laws, enjoy the big city and refuel. Of course, albeit these are vacation days, I’m also taking my laptop and a bunch of work files. Rust (and academia) never sleeps!

It’s A Good Day When

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

You get a good workout at the gym in the morning
You get your Tim’s after that
Your daughter is ecstatic to go shopping for school supplies
You find time to finish an interesting new book (Last Harvest: How a Cornfield Became New Daleville)
You find time to take your other daughter on two trips to the two neighbourhood […]

Crystal Anniversary

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

It’s fifteen years today and we’re still as happy together as ever. Here’s to another fifteen, twenty, forty years or more of wedded bliss. Couldn’t be better!

Realism

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I need to develop a stronger sense of realism when it comes to estimating how long some projects will take. Creating the department’s new website is taking many more hours than I’d thought it would — every single faculty page builds from data already entered by someone else but I do have to tweak it […]

Good News (2) and Bad News (1)

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Good News the first: We are all healthy and were productive today. Kids were back in school and grown-ups got things done. Like purging broken or outgrown toys from youngest’s room and scoping out dining room sets.
Good News the second: My office will get shelves early next week!
Bad News the only: Art the campus carpenter […]
