For Better or For Worse

Monday, December 12th, 2005

In some ways, the end of term is better than the term. Those “pesky” in-class hours are over and you’re no longer draining yourself of all energy performing and orchestrating classroom sessions. Meetings drop to a minimum as those faculty members who can, escape. Lucky them!
On the other hand, there’s the marking. Oy, marking! I […]

Playing hockey, er, hookey

Friday, December 9th, 2005

Went out to watch the local OHL team go down in flames tonight. Eldest was pleased that there was a brawl within the first ten second. No blood on the ice, however: a small disappointment.
Yeah, I know, I shoulda been marking but this day’s been pretty well blown and the girls have been eagerly anticipating […]

Ob, nobse

Friday, December 9th, 2005

I’ve got a cold in my nose. Sniffling, sneezing, the whole nine yards.
And there’s a graduate committee meeting of sorts this morning (don’t ask), and a department meeting after that and a dentist’s appointment in the early afternoon. Bah! And still too many papers to mark.

No way, eh?

Thursday, December 8th, 2005

There is no way I’m going to get 88 papers marked before Saturday morning at nine, is there? Especially when you consider that I have two meetings and a dentist’s appointment scheduled tomorrow?
And I’m not even dreaming of getting the thirty senior papers marked for the Saturday night final. . . .

Boo hiss

Tomorrow night’s the annual headache department Christmas dinner. Which I must attend (except when I’m on sabbatical which is a major reason why I like sabbaticals). Without Mike because we could not get a babysitter (this is literally the story of our lives — to everyone out there who has a babysitter and gets occasional […]

Out with a whimper

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

Term is done (there are classes tomorrow, but none of mine) and I won’t be back in the classroom until January 9th.
But in the meantime I have a (makes thoughtful, scientific analysis of the stacks of paper in front of self) a metric buttload of marking to complete, preferably 2/3 of it before two classes […]

Priorities

Monday, December 5th, 2005

I completed the abstract for the conference I really, really, really want to present at next fall. That’s a relief. Now we play the waiting game.
Of course, the stacks of marking haven’t shrunk markedly in the meantime. I have the last big pile coming in tomorrow afternoon in my last class of the term and […]

Don’t knock yourself out

Sunday, December 4th, 2005

I’ve decided that’s going to be my motto for this week. Taken as a whole, my pile of marking continues to be overwhelming. I got about thirty more assignments out of the way this weekend as well as uploading a swathe of files to WebCT for my senior students’ review.
But I’ve determined that I won’t […]

Never a waste

Buzz Hargrove, you fatuous ass.
Hargrove said there should be a strong NDP opposition, but urged members to vote Liberal in ridings in which the NDP has no chance of winning.
“Whether you elect a Liberal or an NDP, the overall numbers don’t change in terms of the ability to form a coalition government,” he said. “We’re […]

Recharged

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

Walked the dogs to the park this morning. It’s ten below zero and there’s a bit of a breeze with light snow covering the ground. Pretty but chilly. Should have remembered my camera but, heck!, I’m lucky I remembered to change into my really sensible winter boots before sliding around on the newfallen snow.
I’m enjoying […]
